Atlanta Housing Clinches Financial Closing of 450 Hank Aaron Drive
On a street named after the legendary baseball and civil rights icon “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron, Atlanta Housing has scored a significant achievement in its mission to create or preserve 10,000 affordable housing units over a 5-year period. With the financial closing of the former Ramada Plaza Hotel at 450 Hank Aaron Drive on August 26, 2024, Atlanta Housing is poised to create up to 231 affordable studio, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom apartments.
A block from the former Braves' Turner Field and current Georgia State University football stadium, the site is in the heart of Summerhill, a neighborhood experiencing vibrant transformation. As new developments arise and amenities grow, attracting a wave of interest and investment, Atlanta Housing is dedicated to infusing affordability amid an evolving neighborhood. By transforming this site into an affordable residential development, Atlanta Housing aims to bring new life to the site, making this quality, amenity-rich community more accessible. Once completed, residents will also enjoy the convenience of a Publix grocery store within walking distance, enhancing access to fresh food and everyday necessities.
While Atlanta Housing celebrates this closing, the agency continues to push forward with its investments into the people and communities that make Atlanta unique by advancing the twenty-five financial closings budgeted for the 2025 fiscal year, which began on July 1.
As AH continues its positive impact on both the streets and the skyline of Atlanta, the agency remains committed to supporting Mayor Dickens' goal of producing 20,000 affordable housing units by 2030 and demonstrating to the nation, which is still grappling with a housing crisis, that inclusive and equitable affordability can go hand in hand with growth. AH plans to engage the community and various neighborhood associations to gather feedback and input that will help shape the programming and repurposing of the future adaptive-use site and guide the selection of a developer. An RFP for prospective developers is expected to launch this fall.
